The XL stands for Extended Run Time, you can connect external 24 volt batteries in APC External Battery Units, or make your own as large as you like. The batteries died, and was removed from service, we fully tested it with batteries from another unit, worked perfect. This is a battery hot swapable unit. This means you can leave it connected to your equipment without loss of power or having to shut equipment off when changing batteries.This is a great unit because you can add additional battery packs to extend the run time. Many times people buy bigger units to protect their equipment. which gives ability to add more equipment later without overloading the unit. With this unit, say you are protecting 1 or 2 workstations, (2 computers, 2 flat panel displays, ) Then if the desired function is adding a longer run time you can plug external battery modules externally (look at picture on back there is a Plug for external batteries to be added on) There are alot of APC external battery packs made, you could add hours of run time. People have written back to me about adding their own battery pack, using large gell batteries. This unit runs on 24 volts DC, thus 2 - 12 volt batteries as large as you wanted could be connected (best is using Gel or AGM Batteries, Sealed Lead Acid Are good also, which is what the majority of the UPS's use as standard.) Batteries are not included, save on shipping. Batteries can be found very good priced on Ebay. Easy to install. There are a few scratches and blemishes that picture does not show on case.
